The Visionary Behind Thelumberqueen: Archana Massey

I’m Archana Massey. Originally from India, I began my new life in the United States after marrying my husband, Dennis Massey, in 2002. My passion for art has always driven me, inspiring my journey.

I spent many years as a loan officer in the mortgage sector, but my life took a tragic turn in 2012 with the loss of my father, who was also my best friend. This profound grief led me into a deep depression, and I lost my job.

During that difficult period, I reflected on what could reignite joy in my life. The answer was clear: decorating. I found immense happiness in transforming spaces and giving new life to objects.

I began by creating floral arrangements and participating in roadshows at Sam’s Club. Through the kindness of some extraordinary people I met along the way, I was able to connect with buyers and became an approved vendor for Sam’s Club. My husband then encouraged me to add a personal touch to some candle holders he had bought, which sparked my creativity. I painted them in our garage, and the results were stunning. This led to a broader range of products, including pottery, vases, and various home décor items. Again, through the support of wonderful individuals, I showcased my creations at the World Market Center in Las Vegas.

As I ventured into trade shows, I caught the attention of a buyer from TJ Maxx, who placed a significant order that turned my world upside down. My business began to flourish, and soon I had a team of six employees. However, I faced a setback when one of my large orders was rejected due to mold in the wood. Disheartened, I vowed to never work with wood again and let those returned products sit in my warehouse for a year, contemplating a return to the corporate world.

Just as I was closing that chapter, I received an unexpected email from buyers at Home Depot inviting me to present my products in Atlanta, Georgia. After some hesitation, I decided to go, digging up old inventory to showcase alongside my daughter.

The Home Depot buyers loved my products and offered me the opportunity to sell online through their platform. Upon returning home, my husband and I decided to downsize and streamline our operations by consolidating everything into our garage, eliminating the need for a large warehouse.

During the consolidation, a neighbor inquired about my surplus inventory and helped me list the items on Facebook Marketplace. With no prior experience in retail, I started selling products for just a dollar, resulting in a line of eager customers outside our home.

As we sold out, interest in my wood inventory grew, despite my promise to steer clear of it. My husband suggested that I consider continuing with wood due to the demand. While visiting Florida, I discovered unique woods that weren’t available in California, which reignited my passion. Soon, I was sourcing exotic wood from various states, and clients remarked that I had the largest selection they had ever seen.

A particularly impressed client told my husband that our collection surpassed any lumberyard he had visited. Thus, my husband dubbed me the “Lumber Queen,” marking the beginning of my new identity. We quickly became the leading suppliers of exotic lumber in California, offering a diverse array of live-edge slabs.

As business boomed, we outsourced furniture production to Indonesia and Thailand, allowing me to focus on client relationships. We imported beautiful wooden bowls, trays, and furniture pieces, gradually expanding our offerings beyond just wood.

After moving back into a warehouse, my passion for home décor and design intensified, leading me to import even more products from overseas.

This has been my entrepreneurial journey over the past 12+ years. I am eternally grateful for the remarkable individuals God has placed in my life, who have guided and supported me along the way.

While it’s often said that behind every successful man is a woman, in my case, it’s equally true that behind every successful woman stands a supportive man!

The Lumber Queen is about much more than just selling decorative pieces; it’s a celebration of building meaningful relationships and positively influencing the lives of others.

On this journey, we have cultivated numerous friendships and extended our support to those who have faced the loss of a loved one, battled depression, or felt a sense of hopelessness. The core mission of the Lumber Queen is to provide hope and love through our creations, reigniting the spark of life in everyone we meet.

Looking ahead, there are countless beautiful opportunities waiting for the Lumber Queen, along with the promise of connecting with even more remarkable people. I genuinely believe that our future is bright and full of potential!
